Personally I liked this show alot which is why I'm posting it. Its really worth giving a shot. Lots of folks wrote it off after first couple episodes because frankly (and I'm not being arrogant) I think it made folks think too hard so they flipped to another station and watched the simpsons.
Neal McDonough of Band of Brothers fame among many, donnie wahlberg, and gary basaraba all do a great job developing their characters genre. But the weird format of the show causes you to have to think about a story line differently than normal which loses most folks.
So here's a tutorial on how to watch BOOMTOWN and enjoy it. The show's premise was that of a criminal investigation each week, seen from various points of view including the investigators view, then the lawyers view, then paramedics view, then the reporters view, the victims view and the criminals view. Its not like a documentary - and the views get all mixed around in no specific order. The unique quality is that you see a CRIME but then you see what led up to the crime from everyone's perspective.
Also just a warning - the unique format of this show causes the ending of each show to almost seem wanting or missing something because in reality - you see the shows ending about 4-5 different times from 4-5 different perspectives. When the entire show actually ends, it never and I mean NEVER not even once has that kind of soft landing with fade out like traditional shows. I'm not sure what they could do about it and I think this hurt it as well but there's still lot's to enjoy.
Despite the show's innovative style – similar to that of Akira Kurosawa's film Rashōmon, except all the perspectives agree – and glowing critical reviews, the show never drew a significant audience.
The series premiered on September 29, 2002 and the first season order was for 18 episodes instead of the usual 22. After airing 12 episodes with disappointing ratings, NBC moved Boomtown from Sundays to Fridays, putting the show on a two-month hiatus before it returned in March 2003. Its first season ended before May sweeps, an important period in determining ratings and thus ad revenue values.
Boomtown was renewed for a second season, but to satisfy the network's concerns with low ratings, the producers abandoned the show's unique style and changed around the cast. After airing only two episodes, the series was put on hiatus. NBC broadcast reruns of Law & Order in its place before deciding to cancel the series. Three of the remaining unaired episodes were broadcast on December 27, 2003 and the final episode aired on December 28, 2003.
Boomtown received several awards and nominations, including Emmy Awards, Golden Satellite Awards, and Television Critics Association Awards.
Check it out - I personally found the acting compelling, authentic and worthwhile.
